'The memory cheats...Ever seen a film that's stayed with you and then when you saw it again it didn't seem quite the same? Some time ago late at night while a little worse for wear on bubbly lemonade I came across a movie that i watched. It was some kind of American B movie type thing called 'We Are Still The Same'. Some of the special effects were Blue Peter egg box type things, though some of them were out of this world mind blowing. The film was basically about a living organism a bit like The Blob out of that old film, though I suppose it was more about the characters. The main guy was some American Football star who was coming to the end of his career and he was worried about failing performances on the pitch and in the bedroom. He was played by an actor who looked a lot like Pele! The sport was sort of futuristic with lasers and things. He meets an actress who can't act to save her life. At the time I thought she might have been played by Joan Collins, but it really wasn't. Together they have to survive the turmoil caused by this blob thing. There are also these 2 musician types, a little bit Bill & Ted or Wayne & Garth, though they are the first victims of AkaTheBlob while playing their song 'Like Us'. The first half of the movie is the world versus the Blob and then that's when it gets kinda weird! Strange government agents are at large along with mad professors and the stereotypical religious nut, an enigmatic figure named Positive Phibes who wants to save 100 people and rebuild society for his order 'The Symmetrical Arcade. Our heroes find their way here, though our two musician friends somehow find themselves in hell, looking something like a nightmarish Las Vegas. They manage to escape though where they escape to we don't see just yet. Our sporting hero finds out that the blob creature was man-made and the downfall of the world had been planned for some time, but was this just what they wanted him to believe? One of the shadowy government agents, a strange man named Negative Enemy, tells him all the truths or are they the lies? Somehow he manages to escape from the religious group and to begin a new life in what is left of the world. However, his love, the near character of the bad actress, remains in the confines of the new religion lost somehow in her imagined happiness. Our hero is happy to have escaped, but has he really escaped from his prison or merely made another one this time one of his own creation. Still he believes he is making up the story of his life for himself. The end was then a strange psychedelic journey for 5 minutes as we discover the Blob is alive and well being reborn in a laboratory. A creature that grows strong on the darkness of humanity somehow. We see growing in the blob this time the 2 musicians who had left what they thought was hell but it was really a heaven and they were somehow reborn as part of this creature. Camera spins round onto Negative Enemy laughing quietly at first then louder then maniacally. Fade to end, rub tired eyes, go to bed. About 10 years later I managed to catch the film again but this time nothing quite seemed the same. Some parts didn't happen and some parts I had forgotten about or had no recollection of at all. The memory had cheated once more....'
